Scipio Spinks

Scipio Spinks is a former Major League pitcher for the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals, who has spent fifty years in the sport from youth leagues to a Major League player, college and professional team coach, free-agent scout, and full-time professional scout. Spinks, born and raised in Chicago, was signed by the Astros out of Wilson Junior College in 1966, and he played for the big club as a starting pitcher from 1969 to 1971 before joining the St. Louis Cardinals in 1972–73. He was the Cardinals Rookie of the Year in 1972. In the 1980s, he was a pitching coach for Jackson State College in Mississippi and Texas Southern University in Houston. He had a stint as a free-agent scout for the Houston Astros in 1979 and became a full-time free-agent scout in the Texas area for the San Diego Padres from 1990 to 1994.

He was a pitching coach in the San Diego Minor League system from 1994 to 1996. Spinks was a full-time professional scout for the Astros from 1997 to 2012, covering the Major and Minor Leagues, with special assignments in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. He is also an independent private coach in Houston at the ProWay Academy with his friend and fellow contributor, Sid Holland. He has worked with numerous Major and Minor League players and has been a coach and career advisor for scores of youth league, high school, and college players, including Justin Humphries. Scipio was named after “Scipio the Great,” Scipio Africanus, a Roman general who defeated Hannibal in 202 BC.
